playBC: alphabet-themed writing workshop

30 days of alphabet-themed poetry workshops, every day in November

playBC: Every day in November!

Who decided novelists get to have all the fun in November? Sure, poets have National Poetry Writing Month in April, but that was so long ago. You've got new stories to tell! New poems to write! New friends to make!

playBC is a daily alphabet-themed workshop led by Tristan Richards. Each day, we'll spend our time with one letter—the theme we explore and poets we read will all start with the same letter. It'll look a little like this:

  • A is for Awake

  • B is for Before

  • C is for Chaos

  • D is for Desire

  • E is for Exhale

Note: these were 2024 themes and will change for 2025

You get the point. Each day, for two hours, a Zoom room will be available to you as a space to connect with community and be led through several writing exercises. Let's shake out the dust and have some fun!

Not able to make it to a live session every day? No problem! Nothing is required, and you'll also receive a daily email with self-paced workshop information, so you can complete it all at your own pace.

You'll walk away from playBC with many new poem drafts, having been introduced to dozens of new poets, and ideally, having made a new friend or two! I'll provide poems to read, several invitations for writing, and structured space for you to do that writing. My workshops are as much about community as they are about creating new material, and I mean that especially about both playBC and its National Poetry Writing Month sibling, Unfold. There's something special about seeing the same writers every day (or as often as you can make it). It feels a little like magic.

If you're thinking hmm, Tristan, this sounds a lot like Unfold... honestly you're not wrong. The container is similar. However, playBC is significantly more playful and experimental than Unfold. In April, we commit to achieving a big writing goal. In November, we play for the sake of play!

Typical Workshop Structure

Each two-hour workshop will include the following:

  1. Check in & introductions

  2. Read & discuss 3-4 poems around a particular topic

  3. Brainstorm

  4. Dedicated time to write to a prompt

  5. Read back (optional but encouraged)

  6. Announcements & wrap up

Zoom links are emailed to participants the day of the workshop. Each day will be a different Zoom link, so I recommend deleting the daily emails after you attend a workshop.

Testimonials

"Every single one of Tristan’s workshops is led by her lovingly guiding heart. She creates spaces that are full of possibilities and acceptance and most of all, fun to be in!"

"Anyone considering should 100% join for: creative, warm, and supportive facilitation, an absolutely delightful and ridiculously talented community of poets, a safe and welcoming container that provides so much motivation and accountability...I could go on and on!! So valuable, so fun, it's a no brainer, DO IT!"

"I loved seeing the community grow over time and getting to know people through their poetry. The body of work studied was massive and so much fun to parse through with others. I think it's really cool how many of us are still in touch."

"The community was SO welcoming and flexible. I didn't feel ashamed about not being able to attend every workshop, but I was always SO EXCITED to be at the ones I could. I always felt better, buzzing, to be gently pushed toward a fuller, more creative self in such an authentic and joyous crew that was so happy to be together. I loved the group chats, working with other writers with such various experiences and skillsets, and feeling so seen as I was."

"It was amazing to meet so many beautiful people and poets and hear their words each week. It was incredibly inspiring. [...] All of them were so carefully curated and I only regret missing the nights I couldn't attend."

"I feel like I was able to build a lot of momentum with my writing and confidence in my ability to be a poet!"

"I'm super proud of writing outside my comfort zone - writing on different topics than I usually would, playing with form, writing so many poems in a month! I was introduced to new poets & forms through the workshop, which was really cool!"

"I feel like the sheer output of writing for one month launched me into a new level with poetry, where I don't feel so "brand new" anymore. Logging that many hours in a month was like putting rocket shoes on my feet. I'm proud of myself for showing up for it."

  • Hi! I'm Tristan! Here's my formal bio:

Her poems have been published in ALOCASIA, Writers Resist, trampset, Preposition: The Undercurrent Anthology, on the Mankato Poetry Walk & Ride, and in Firethorne. She is the recipient of a Professional Mid-Career Artist Grant from the Minnesota Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council.

Tristan holds an MA in Leadership in Student Affairs from the University of St. Thomas and a BA in Communication Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College. She worked in higher education until 2022.

  • Technically, no. I am piggybacking off the energy around NaNoWriMo* and providing a space geared more toward poets and creative nonfiction writers. However, if you are working on a novel this month, you’re still welcome to join us! As someone who has attempted (and failed) NaNoWriMo several times, some of my most productive writing sessions came out of facilitated writing sprints. playBC workshops are essentially writing sprints with more dialogue and community building. You’re welcome to adapt our prompts to fit any project you’re working on and write in community even if it isn’t a poem.

*NaNoWriMo = National Novel Writing Month. Each November, many novelists try to start and finish writing a 50,000 word novel.

  • Everyone! Each time I host a daily workshop like this, everyone from people who have never written a poem to professional poets and teaching artists join us. There is no qualification you need to meet; no requirement to share your writing if you’d rather not. You don't even have to write poetry!

  • I am mostly insane, so I love taking on massive projects like this. I will show up every day with fully fleshed out writing workshops and plenty of energy. How you engage is up to you! Some writers come every day, some pop in once or twice, and most attend several times each week. Attendance is not taken and nothing is required—you get to decide what kind of experience and engagement level you want to have!

  • Because this is my full time job :) A lot of work goes into building community and facilitating workshops and unfortunately I have bills to pay and, like, occasional coffee to drink.

  • Honestly? Because members of this community keep telling me I’m not charging them enough. My first large workshop was entirely free with a brief donation request on the last day. When Unfold, my daily workshop in April, grew in 2023, I started charging $60 for access to 30 workshops, which was not nearly enough to justify the work that went into it, but I was scared :) In 2024 I raised my prices and I likely will again in 2025. It’s intimidating to turn what used to be something you did for free into a career, and I’m so grateful to all the writers who have yelled at me about getting over myself and asking for fair income. This is how I make it possible to keep providing workshops into the future.

  • Listen, I get it. I will always have lower price points, payment plans, and limited scholarships available for writers who need them. I have been that writer more times than not, and I know how vulnerable it can be to admit you need help doing something that others have no trouble paying for. I’m not interested in locking you out of writing community in the name of capitalism. Please reach out if you want to join us but need a little support!

  • Great question! With the membership, you'll get an email from me every day in November, which will include a packet of poems to read, a brief form lesson, and a writing prompt or two. You'll get a more interactive experience from attending the live workshops, but this way, you can keep up with playBC at your own pace! So yes, I think it's still very much worth the membership if you're interested in writing more in November.

Tell your writing that November is the month of play!
